Understanding How Wind Speed and Wind Load Works

Whether you’re building a new roof or planning out a replacement, any residential and commercial roofer will know that all homes and buildings are at risk when they sustain damage during high winds. They’re also knowledgeable on the principles behind wind speed and wind load, which means they can determine how your roof should be built to sufficiently withstand damage.

To understand more about wind speed and wind load, Southern Roofing Company explains what you need to know below:

Defining Wind Speed

A wind speed is usually reported by the National Weather Service, which is typically measured at a point 33 feet above the ground. They’re reported as a sustained speed to reflect the average speed of the wind. Wind may also be reported as a three-second peak gust speed; it gives a better idea of the peak wind speeds that are sustained for a short time.

Wind slows due to friction with obstructions and blows faster in open areas where there’s no structure or object large enough to slow it down. Air flows fluidly, so obstructions near the ground can affect wind speed at a much greater height. For instance, buildings that are over 30 feet tall can create aerodynamic drag that can slow down air that’s flowing at an altitude of 1,500 feet.

Defining Wind Load

The wind load is the force that the structure actually has to resist. Your hired roofing and gutter installation contractor should be aware of the minimum wind load requirements in the overall design of your project to ensure your home or building can withstand loads without stressing its materials beyond their limits.

Although wind speed will give some indication of the potential for damage, for a given speed, the wind load on a building can vary by more than 30%. Some of the factors that influence the wind load include your structure’s orientation to the wind, its shape, the air density and Wind Exposure Category where your structure is located.
